I'm also feeling the desire to "get back to normal," to travel, to go out to eat. It's not that we can't or don't do those things now, but rather that there is a lingering sense of foreboding or paranoia that lingers in the back of one's mind. The virus in this sense is like a headache that is not bad enough to make you lie down, but enough to make you miserable and short with people.

After the war, people went "back to normal" with a vengeance, if you understand "normal" to be the nuclear family. That is, the sense of elation and prosperity that came with peace led us to find new ways to express and embrace domesticity, with transformative results we are still living with -- for instance, the rise of suburbs, home ownership as the measure of happiness, etc. It's not that people felt different after the war: they just really wanted to feel the same way as before, only more intensely, all the time.

I imagine post-Covid will be the same thing: the old desires flooding back, inspiring new and transformative ways to scratch the old itch. One wonders what we'll come up with this time.Rogerrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14099689634463836614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7685533049738406832.post-32771612123179556272020-11-28T06:46:08.590-08:002020-11-28T06:46:08.590-08:00Yes yes--and not quite over yet.Yes yes--and not quite over yet.Dianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12396312339372162866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7685533049738406832.post-73985942841745775322020-11-27T21:13:13.821-08:002020-11-27T21:13:13.821-08:00Yes it has been a reign of terror.Yes it has been a reign of terror.Ellenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14979942382683140531noreply@blogger.com
